RKOC: Whirokino, Sunday March 8, 2026 - the Orienteer of the Year Series is back....

Whirokino, the first RK forest/farm event of 2026, will also be the first event in a new regional Orienteer of the Year (OY) Series. This will consist of 6 events, 2 each run by RK, OHV and OW. At each event there will be 7 courses: 3 red (long, medium and short), 2 orange (long and short), yellow and white. Points will be awarded on each course with 25 points going to each of the fastest male and female. Others will score points according to 25 * winners time/your time. Over the whole series, on each course the 4 best scores out of the 6 events will count, so it's important that you run the same course at each event.
 
For this first event at Whirokino the courses are planned by Rick Weymouth and controlled by Malcolm Ingham. The terrain is open farmland sand dunes - big hills and quite rough under foot, presenting a real technical and physical challenge. The courses are:

For those new to forest/farm orienteering a guide is:
 
White / Yellow: an opportunity to stretch your the orienteering skills learned on campus and park maps to slightly more adventurous terrain.
Orange courses - suitable for adventure racing training, relatively easy control sites and orange long more challenging.
Red courses - aimed at more experienced orienteers. Red long a challenge for the younger and fitter.
 
Start times from 11-1, course closure at 3.
 
Signposted from Oturoa Road. From the North on SH1: 1.6 km south of the Manawatu River, then a further 2.9km. From the South on SH1: 4.4 km north of the Waitarere Beach Road turn-off, then a further 2.9km, following the Orienteering signs.
