Busy August for Red Kiwi Orienteers

Published Thu 04 Sep 2025

The Red Kiwi Orienteering Club has had a very big August.

Early in the month was the Schools Teams competition - a Rogaine at Paniere Park in Palmerston North with the addition of the Awatapu Racecourse area for the Senior Secondary students. Although the weather was not ideal on the day, the turnout was fabulous and the teams of 3 had a great time finding as many controls scattered about the park and making it back to the finish within their allotted time.

Participants ranged from completely inexperienced students to children who have participated in the schools training throughout the year,  children who are also Red Kiwi members and some students who are in their schools Adventure Racing teams.

In the evening the course was repeated with participants getting their maps while it was still just light and then having an hour to find as many controls as possible using their head torches. Once again, great fun, and an amazing experience running in the dark with head torches shining through the squalls of rain.

A couple of weeks later, a classic Sunday event at Waterloo Park further up the river attracted a good range of people, with 3 courses set to cater for complete beginners, through to those developing their competence.
