Training Day
Great day out on the farm today for around 25 orienteers honing their navigation skills.
Thanks to Malcolm who planned the exercises and did the teaching, Russell and Denise who put out most of the controls last weekend, and Carol and Peter who helped them finish off putting the flags and SI boxes on in the morning, and then with collecting everything in again. Russell also set up the timing.
Thanks also to the farmers who allowed us onto their properties and let us have the electric fences turned off!
Orange to Red level participants had either a contour only map to find the controls in the morning exercise-no fences, tracks, streams or other water features, or vegetation changes to help. Those moving from Yellow to Orange level had the same controls but a much more normal looking map but without fences, and those moving from White to Yellow level were supervised through a challenging Yellow course with lots of opportunity for cutting corners, and plenty of practice at becoming familiar with control features such as re-entrants and earthbanks.
The afternoon's activity was a 'control picking' course. At each control there were 3 choices of which control was the correct one. For example, one control was in a re-entrant (middle). In the region, there were 3 re-entrants, all with a control in them, and with the same number on the contol box. Only one of them was the correct one. Participants had to use their map reading skills to decide which one was the correct one to punch.
Next up- the 2X2 Relay and 50th birthday celebrations all on the same day- Sunday 15th November. Entry form for the Relay should be up soon. Hope to see you there!
